Exports of Provence Rosé to U.S. Jump 62% from 2010 to 2011

– With double-digit growth recorded each of the last eight years, export volumes of Provence rosé to the United States are at an all-time high –

(New York, NY, March 21, 2012) – Exports of rosé wine from the Provence region of France to the United States grew 62% in volume last year as compared to 2010. On value, rosé exports for the 2010–2011 period increased at a rate of 49%, reaching a record high of 9.9 million euros. This is according to statistics reported by the French customs agency via Ubifrance, the French agency for export promotion.

These numbers confirm the continuation of an upward trend that began in 2003 and that has seen double-digit growth rates in each of the intervening years. Last year’s jump of 62% was the largest single increase in Provence rosé export volumes in that eight-year period.

Provence rosé’s growing popularity isn’t unique to the United States. French customs figures also show an upward trend in the volume of rosé exported from Provence to countries such as Brazil and Russia.

“What we’re seeing in the U.S. market reflects a global trend,” said Julie Peterson of the Vins de Provence U.S. office. “Those who appreciate great wine and the Mediterranean lifestyle are turning to Provence rosé for its versatility, food friendliness, and gold standard quality.”

Provence is France’s top producer of rosé, contributing 38% of the nation’s AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) rosés. From a worldwide perspective, Provence is “the only wine region to devote 87% of its production to rosé,” said Francois Millo, director of the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence.

The Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence (CIVP), known in the United States as the Provence Wine Council, is an organization representing more than 600 wine producers and 40 trade companies from the Provence region of France. Its mission is to promote and advance the wines of the region’s principal appellations. The organization’s members together produce 96 percent of Provence’s Appellation d’Origine Controlee (AOC) wines.
