Rosè Lends Pairing Panache to the Holiday Table |
What to serve while entertaining holiday guests? Provence rosè is increasingly being recognized for its food-pairing versatility in any season:
“Contrary to the belief of some, summer is not the only time of the season to enjoy Rosè. … I especially like to have Rosè … at Thanksgiving.”
–wine maven John Tilson
in The Underground Wineletter
“At my table, there are so many different flavors, different meats, stuffing, corn bread, it’s hard to pick a single wine to match everything, but I like a dry rosè.”
–Mac McDonald, California vintner,
in “What Kind of Holiday Cheer Are You Serving?” on TheRoot.com
“[T]hese Rosè wines are … marvelous at bridging that confusing ‘White or Red?’ conundrum at any time of year.”
–from “Think Pink This Thanksgiving”

VARIETIES |
Provence Reds and Whites Poised for Growth |
Provence winemakers are known for their rosès – no surprise there. That’s why Paul Sanguinetti of the Patina Restaurant Group was “blown away by the quality of some of the reds and whites” he tasted on a recent trade trip to Provence. “Rosè is what they’re known for, but these producers are also passionate about their reds and whites,” said the Los Angeles-based sommelier, who said he tasted “amazing reds” and “phenomenal whites” on the Vins de Provence-sponsored tour.
Many Provence producers are actively seeking importers and retailers to partner with in bringing their reds, whites and rosès to the U.S. market. At present, a quarter of the labels listed in the directory at WinesofProvence.com are reds, which already have some market recognition, while 15% are whites awaiting discovery. If you’d like help connecting with Provence producers to boost your portfolio, contact Carlene Hastings at AWS Corporation (chastings@awscorp.com, 202-296-3524). |

RECAP |
Trade Members Visit Provence, Discover Gems |
 |
Eight wine professionals from across the United States experienced Provence at harvest time during a six-day trade trip in October. Participants toured vineyards, tasted wines, sampled Provençal cuisine, and met one-on-one with local producers.
The participants went in search of producers to form long-term relationships with as they build their portfolios for 2012 and beyond. They were especially interested in those without much presence in the U.S. – the “undiscovered gems” of the region. And as one importer said, “I think I found the ones I was looking for.”
If you’d like to be a part of next fall’s trade trip to Provence, please contact Carlene Hastings at AWS Corporation (chastings@awscorp.com, 202-296-3524). |

TERROIR SERIES |
Coteaux Varois en Provence AOC |
The final appellation in our series on the terroirs of Provence is the centrally located Coteaux Varois en Provence. This terroir, protected by mountains, includes 28 towns centered on Brignoles. It enjoys an inland Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and harsh winters. The vineyards average an altitude of 1,200 feet, with soils primarily clay-limestone.
The perfectly pale rosè wines from the region are produced mainly from Cinsault and Grenache grapes. With an elegant bouquet and a refined taste, they offer a perfect balance between alcohol and the natural acidity that is characteristic of this region.
