Since antiquity, the valley of Esclans has been famous for its grapes, which once adorned Roman tables. The Domaine de Jas d'Esclans is mentioned in records dating to the 13th century, and it appears on Cassini’s map dated 1740. The domaine's activities have evolved through the centuries. First, its fields were the summer pastures of sheep, from which the name Jas arose; later its rows of mulberry trees were used to feed silkworms for the silk trade; then arose viticulture, which remains the focus today.
The domaine has always prioritized traditional growing methods, and its wines have been certified since 1990 with the Ecocert seal, indicating the use of organically grown grapes. The combination of traditional hand-harvesting and modern vinification methods enable the producers to craft wines of great quality in conformance with Cru Classé standards. |
